September is Safe Sleep Awareness Month, a reminder that your baby’s sleep space should be just as safe as it is cozy. As a Newborn Care Specialist and Sleep Consultant, I’ve seen how a few simple adjustments can make a big difference in protecting little ones during their most vulnerable hours. Let’s walk through the essentials.
1. The ABCs of Safe Sleep
Alone: Your baby should sleep in their own crib or bassinet—not in your bed.
Back: Always place your baby on their back for naps and nighttime sleep.
Crib: A firm mattress covered with a fitted sheet is all you need: no pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals.
2. Room Sharing, Not Bed Sharing
Keeping your baby’s crib or bassinet in your room for the first 6–12 months can make nighttime care easier and safer.
3. Keep it Cool & Comfortable
Dress your baby in a swaddle or wearable blanket instead of loose covers. The room should be comfortably cool, around 68–72°F (20–22°C).
4. Check for Hazards
No bumpers, loose bedding, or toys in the crib.
Wires, curtains, and monitor cords should be out of reach.
5. Follow Baby’s Cues
If your baby rolls over on their own after several months, there’s no need to reposition them, just ensure the sleep space remains hazard-free.
Safe sleep doesn’t have to feel complicated. By following these guidelines, you can rest easier knowing you’ve given your baby the safest start possible.
